For Ticino, the Ceneri base tunnel heralds a new era. Thanks to massively shorter journey times in the Bellinzona-Locarno-Lugano triangle, public transport in Ticino will experience a quantum leap. The tunnel will also generate positive economic and social effects in Ticino and in neighbouring Lombardy.
Improvements in passenger services thanks to the Ceneri base tunnel – a summary.
Compared to the existing Ceneri line ("mountain" route), the Ceneri base tunnel will cut journey time by some 15 minutes (Zurich to Lugano, for example, will now take less than two hours).
60 trains per day through the Gotthard base tunnel instead of today's 50 trains
Around 30 rather than 60 minutes for services between Locarno and Lugano
