The opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel marks the completion of the New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA). The creation of this new Rhine-Alps corridor will be a moment for great celebration. To do justice to this spectacular event, Swiss Post will be selling special Ceneri 2020 postage stamps from 3 September 2020. On the three adjoining postage stamps, a train travels from the port of Rotterdam to Milan with the Alps in the centre. This image represents northern and southern Europe coming closer together. A must for all railway enthusiasts and stamp collectors.
President Simonetta Sommaruga officially opened the Ceneri Base Tunnel alongside Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis and the president of the Ticino Cantonal Council, Norman Gobbi, thereby marking the completion of the New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA) launched in 1992. This epic achievement strengthens Switzerland’s policy of transferring freight traffic from road to rail and protecting the Alps. Not only will rail travellers benefit from shorter journey times from north to south, thanks to the Ceneri, Ticino also gains an attractive urban railway. In their speeches, SBB CEO Vincent Ducrot and ATG CEO Dieter Schwank also stressed the importance of the NRLA for Switzerland and for rail travel.

In the first week of September, Simonetta Sommaruga, President of the Swiss Confederation, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis and the president of the Ticino cantonal council Norman Gobbi will open the new Ceneri Base Tunnel, the final link in the New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA). The tunnel will be officially handed over to the operator SBB on 4 September. A day previously, Ms Sommaruga will meet representatives of Switzerland’s partner countries. The NRLA – the heart of the rail freight corridor running through the Alps – is key to Switzerland’s policy of shifting freight transport from road to rail. The Tunnel is still expected to come into operation in December 2020.Thanks to the Ceneri Base Tunnel, Ticino also gains an attractive suburban railway.
The festivities to mark the opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel (CBT) and the completion of the New Rail Link through the Alp (NRLA) in September will be significantly more low-key than originally planned because of the corona pandemic. The decision has been taken not to invite guests and the transport ministers’ meeting will take place by video conference. The Ceneri Base Tunnel is still expected to come into operation in December 2020.
In a joint statement of intent entitled 'Chance Ceneri 2020', Richard Lutz, Andreas Meyer and Gianfranco Battisti, the CEOs of DB, SBB and FS Italiane, agreed to join forces to make this quantum leap for Europe's mobility.
